Þóra

Þóra's favourite Icelandic fact is the existence of a secret and mythical fifth noun case. If you ask her about it, she might divulge the secret. Or she might have to kill you to keep it. 50/50.

Style

Half-English, half-Icelandic, and all fun, Þóra brings a unique bilingual perspective to her classroom (as well as an accent that would make Hugh Grant swoon). Her approach emphasises getting her students to speak and teaching vocabulary and grammar through guided conversations as she adapts to each student's needs like a linguistic chameleon.

Education / Experience

Þóra is seeped in language, coming from a background of translation.

  • BA in Translation Studies from the University of Iceland

When Þóra isn't teaching, she's translating.

  • Private Icelandic teacher on through, 2017-2023
  • English-Icelandic translator

Languages

Þóra can teach in Icelandic and English.

She also speaks German, French, and Japanese, as well as some Spanish, Italian, and Greek. Also, Scandinavian: an unholy amalgamation of Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, and Icelandic.

Valgerður

Valgerður once taught a group of catholic nuns through a Hannibal Lecter-style glass wall. We've since made it clear to Valgerður that she can't eat students. Not even a little bit.

Style

Valgerður has a deep understanding of the difficulties of learning a language, being a lifelong language learner herself. Her approach is rooted in that empathy, creating a safe space where mistakes are celebrated as stepping stones toward proficiency.

Education / Experience

Valgerður is a passionate language learner herself, and her impressive degree collection reflects that.

  • BA in Russian from the University of Iceland
  • MA in Russian and Russian literature from the University of Iceland
  • Diploma in Pedagogy from the University of Iceland

Teaching is Valgerður's passion. She teaches Icelandic as a second language with us as a side-gig to her main job, which is teaching Icelandic as a second language.

  • Valgerður has been teaching Icelandic as a second language to teens in Réttarholtsskóli since 2018.

Languages

Valgerður can teach in Icelandic and English. She also speaks Russian.

Siggi

The man is a compulsive teacher. If he didn't get paid to do this, he would just be really annoying at parties. He founded Icelandic made easi(er) out of boredom in Covid lockdowns, and now he runs it because he would be bored doing anything else.

Siggi only takes on new private students by invitation these days, but you can still learn with him through the self-study course!

Style

Siggi is the laziest Icelandic teacher in the country, and avoids teaching Icelandic as much as possible. Instead, he teaches his students HOW to learn and where to find the best resources, empowering people on their learning journeys.

Education / Experience

Siggi's linguistics background shines through in his attitude to language. Namely, that it's fascinating.

  • BA in Linguistics from the University of Iceland

Siggi is a compulsive teacher with over half a decade of experience teaching Icelandic.

  • 2017-2020, Siggi was teaching at the Tin Can Factory.
  • 2020: Siggi founded Icelandic made easi(er)
  • 2020-present: Siggi is teaching and managing IME

Languages

Sigg can teach in Icelandic, English, and French. He also speaks Spanish.
